Data aggregated by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education shows that there is a disconnect between the enrollment of African-Americans in the St. Louis regional schools and the percentage of those African-American students taking AP classes in high school, but teachers at Ladue Horton Watkins High School are tackling the issue, and their efforts are making a difference.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch published an article in May giving voice to the issue and spotlighting Ladue Horton Watkins High School as an entity that is working to make a positive change. Teachers at the school volunteer their time with STRIDE, Students Taking Rigorous Instruction Developing Exceptionally, an after-school club for African-American and Hispanic students enrolled in AP classes. According to the article, in the four years since the program was launched, the number of black and Hispanic students enrolled in Ladue’s AP courses has increased by 159 percent.
