Recently, HEC-TV, the district’s local professional television partner, won seven Emmys, including one for “Behind the Minds: 2016”, a show in which Spoede Elementary gives an overview of its Math Fact Scholars program in the “Practice, Practice, Practice Math Facts” segment.
Each week, kids in grades K-4 come in the hour before school to tackle timed math tests. The program began in 2014 and has grown to 184 students.
“I think they learn important life lessons, like you don’t always win. You don’t always get everything the first time you try for it,” Principal Dr. Kim Stallons said. “They learn perseverance. They learn that it’s okay to make mistakes, but you learn from those mistakes, and you get better and then that’s how you continue achieving, whatever your goal may be.”
