Old Bonhomme’s sweet potatoes were ready to harvest this week! Kate Pichon, a parent volunteer who works with the Old Bonhomme garden, approached Chartwell’s about doing an activity with the students using the potatoes.
First, the second grade students harvested more than 60 of the potatoes on Wednesday.
“It was great to be there and watch the students dig up the potatoes,” Sue Blumm, the district’s in-house representative from Chartwell’s, said. Melissa Garth, a Chartwell’s employee, even got in with the students and got her hands dirty.
Then on Thursday, the cafeteria employees made fresh sweet potato fries with the students, and every kid got to sample the fries during lunch. They also learned some fun facts about the spud.
“Students loved making the connection between what they took from the garden one day to what they were eating the next,” Sue said. One student even told them, “Thank you for all your hard work. It couldn’t have been easy cutting up all those hard potatoes.”
