Rhonda West, a Speech/Language Pathologist at Old Bonhomme Elementary, received the February Excellence in Education Award at the Feb. 27, 2017, Board of Education meeting. Congratulations to Rhonda on this prestigious recognition!
Rhonda has worked for the Ladue School District since May of 2012, when she took her position at Old Bonhomme.
If you ask the staff at Old Bonhomme Elementary about Rhonda West, they’ll tell you that she’s an exceptional educator, one whose commitment to her student is foremost and outstanding. She’s skillful and talented when it comes to instructional planning and delivery, and her reservoir of support and encouragement for her students and fellow staff members seems endless.
Since joining the Old Bonhomme team, Rhonda has made significant contributions to the response to intervention approach used at the school to support students at all levels of programming. Rhonda arrived at the start of these efforts, and she jumped into the research and planning with contagious enthusiasm, energy and commitment, not to mention a solid foundation of knowledge to help build a functional response program for all Old Bonhomme students. Rhonda’s expertise with speech and language acquisition benefited the staff greatly as they gathered input to construct the program.
Rhonda collaborated with fellow staff members to make various process steps efficient. “We value her research into effective programming for students,” Principal Cheryl Kirchgessner said. “Her efforts have revolutionized the growth of her students and scheduling of services in amazing ways.”
A quiet but powerful team player, Rhonda leads by example. She participates in the schoolwide efforts around diversity and equality, her communication practices are timely and helpful, and her students always know how they’re doing with Mrs. West’s class. They have ready access to their progress charts and set goals with her and revisit these on a regular basis. And not only does Rhonda engage with students regarding their progress in class, but she also introduces reflective and mindful practices to her students, which some of her colleagues have begun to initiate in their classrooms. “Mrs. West is proactive in every sense of the word,” Principal Cheryl Kirchgessner said. “She supports her colleagues with authentic and helpful feedback and encouragement.”
Rhonda is originally from Cortez, Colorado. Rhonda and her husband, Bob Prow, have been married for 26 years. The couple has two children: Sydney, 19, who attends Truman State University, and Molly.
Rhonda received her undergraduate degree in Humanities at Grinnell College, and she has her Masters of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Fontbonne University.
