USMC 1st Lt. Philip Sauer, a 1961 alumnus of Ladue Schools, died on April 24, 1967, during the Vietnam War. He was able to save one of the five men in his patrol. This had earned him a Silver Star award, but the paperwork had been lost during the war, and his family did not receive it. Not until this year.
Philip’s four siblings were finally awarded his Silver Star in 2018, 51 years to the day he died in Vietnam. It’s the military’s third highest award for battlefield bravery. To read more, click here.
