This past May 2019, Sophia “Sassy” Saleeby (8) competed in the 92nd Annual Scripps National Spelling Bee held at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland. Although contestants who participate in spelling bee competitions come from both sponsored and unsponsored areas, prior to the 2018 National Competition, unsponsored finalists were not offered the opportunity to compete in the National Finals, also known as Bee Week. However, this year with the implementation of the RSVBee program, competitors like Sassy, who represent unsponsored regions, now had a shot at spelling during Bee Week.
During the competition, Sassy earned 51st place among an incredible 562 students in this very prestigious spelling bee. The highly competitive process began with an astounding 11 million students competing in local, regional, and state spelling bees. Acting on her own, Sassy raised her participant fees by selling spelling bee cookies, and through various other fundraising efforts. As a result of her creative initiatives, Sassy was also featured by Scripps in their “Bee Inspired” video. Click here to see more.
Congratulations speller #306, Sophia Saleeby!
