This past summer, Yuvan Chali (9) competed in the National You Be The Chemist Challenge®. The Chemical Educational Foundation (CEF), a nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring students to pursue chemistry and STEM-related learning and careers, hosted its 15th annual competition this year. The event, hosted by Dr. Calvin Emanuel of Shell Chemical LP, consisted of 42 sixth- through eighth-grade students competing in a quiz-bowl style chemistry tournament at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C.
Prior to advancing to the June 17th national competition, each of the participants won their challenge at the state-level. Yuvan, a current 9th grader, competed nationally in both 7th and 8th grade while attending Ladue Middle School (LMS). This year, Yuvan finished 2nd in the country after several rounds and an intense tie-breaker round.
“Watching Yuvan’s hard work pay off as he continued to advance in the You Be the Chemist® competition was incredible,” states Dr. Sarah Adams Schwartz, Assistant Principal at LMS. “The entire audience was on the edge of their seats during the competition, and even more so during the finals. The LMS community is so proud of Yuvan’s accomplishments! We hope that other LMS students are inspired to follow in his footsteps and get involved with this program in the future by joining the new You Be The Chemist club!”
Yuvan was awarded a $6000 scholarship for his accomplishments. Congratulations, Yuvan!
