Shelei Pan Helps Create Valuable Resource for Students Interested in Medicine

2020 LHWHS graduate Shelei Pan wants to help high school students pursue a career in medicine.

Shelei helped create SmartStart, a website full of resources for high school juniors and seniors who are interested in applying for a BS/MD program.

A BS/MD program is a combined Bachelor of Science – or Bachelor of Arts – and Doctor of Medicine dual-degree program that allows high school seniors to apply for both an undergraduate program and medical school at the same time.

Upon completion of their undergraduate degree, students in the BS/MD program can proceed directly into medical school.

Shelei, along with four of her rising freshman peers in Washington University’s BS/MD program, created SmartStart to help students with the application process and to raise awareness of BS/MD programs.

The website allows high school students to talk directly with college students in BS/MD programs about their experiences in applying for and attending the dual-degree program.

The site also contains a comprehensive list of BS/MD programs available across the nation and links to program websites and applications, along with a blog that offers student perspectives on what it’s like to study in the program, as opposed to taking the traditional pre-med route.

Shelei said there are more updates coming soon to the site and for interested high school students to check back frequently.

SmartStart also can be found on Instagram at @smartstartbsmd.
