Several members of the Ladue Middle School Math Competition Team scored among the nation’s best in a recent nationwide competition.
Thirty-nine LMS students participated in the American Mathematics Competition for 8th grade and younger students sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America.
Alex Wang scored in the top one percent of all participants.
Steven Shaw (6), Newman Shen (6), Jonathan Yao (8), and Celina Zhou (7) all scored in the top five percent of participants.
The test consisted of 25 multiple choice, problem-solving questions; students had 40 minutes to complete it.
Questions cover many topics including counting and probability, estimation, proportional reasoning, elementary geometry including the Pythagorean Theorem, spatial visualization, everyday applications, and reading and interpreting graphs and tables.
